A native of Great Britain, David Wroe is Music Director and Conductor
of the critically
acclaimed
Westfield Symphony Orchestra , the resident orchestra of Union County, NJ.
He was Principal Conductor at the City Opera of Heidelberg, and recently
held the positions of Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra
and Music Director of the Kansas City Camerata. Orchestras conducted include
the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony, New York City Ballet,
Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, L'Orchestre Lamoureux, the Jerusalem Symphony
Orchestra, the Florida West Coast Symphony, the Eugene Symphony Orchestra,
the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, the Des Moines Symphony, the Wayne Chamber
Orchestra, the Philharmonische der Stadt Heidelberg, and the Symphonic Orchester
Vorarlberg at the Bregenz Festival in Austria.
In addition, Mr. Wroe has toured Europe with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players and served as cover conductor for the San Francisco Symphony. In 1998, he conducted a benefit concert featuring Mstislav Rostropovitch as soloist in the presence of Madame Chirac at the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris.
As Principal Conductor at the City Opera of Heidelberg, Mr. Wroe's opera credits include La Boheme, Fidelio, Amadis (J.C. Bach), Merry Wives of Windsor, Arabella, Entfuhrung, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Forza del destino. In addition he has performed Porgy & Bess and Hansel & Gretelin concert with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra, and opened Fresno Grand Opera's season with La Boheme.
Mr. Wroe devotes considerable time to education and outreach, and played a prominent roles in the Boston Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerts and the WSO Caravan Program which he founded. He teaches, and is a regular guest conductor at the New England Conservatory, and served as a judge for the Music Assistance Fund administered by the American Symphony Orchestra League. In addition, he has given master classes at Harvard University with the Laboratory Orchestra, and was a conductor at the Tanglewood Music Centre and Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
In 1995 Mr. Wroe was recognized in the United States Congress as the recipient of US Sprint's 'Up and Comers' award for his excellence in contributing to the community in Kansas City. Also in that year he was a finalist in the First Bernstein International Conducting Competition, where he was voted Orchestra's First Choice.
Mr. Wroe attended Lancing College, holds a Bachelor of Music from Manchester University in England, a Master's of Music from Northwestern University in Chicago, and was a student of the international teacher Gustav Meier. In 1992 he received the Seiji Ozawa Fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Festival.
