Westfield High School TV Production Studio Use
& Reservation Procedures / Guidelines

The primary purpose of the Westfield High School TV Studio is to provide students with an effective curriculum in which they learn and demonstrate technical and creative skills. TV-36 also produces programming for the local access channel, documenting and archiving Westfield culture and history, and provides a means of informing the public of Westfield school and community activities. WHS TV-36 will not broadcast material deemed inappropriate to its school/community mission. This includes, but is not limited to, productions of sexually explicit materials or obscene language, or tapes commercial in nature for a profit-making organization.

In Studio Programming

· The studio (located in Westfield High School at 550 Dorian Road) is available 4-10 p.m. weekdays and 9-3 Saturdays by reservation; also available on certain weekdays of the school year and during the summer (July and August). Advanced reservations are requested. (Studio schedules are created weeks, even months ahead of time.)

· The Westfield Public School system reserves the right to accept/deny production requests.

· Only regularly scheduled productions (a minimum commitment of 6 in a 12 month period) or special events of particular importance to the community will be considered.

· Producers of programming must recruit and provide their own crew, who must all attend a training seminar before operating the equipment or provide evidence of their professional qualifications.

Untrained personnel will not be allowed to operate the equipment.

· The following rates apply to other-party productions, e.g. not of WHS Television:
STUDIO/$25 hr. + ENGINEER/$25 hr.

Two hour minimum-engineer required EDITING SUITE/$25 hr. + ENGINEER/$25 hr.

One hour minimum-engineer required for at least first visit. Repeat visitors may opt to edit without the aid of an engineer. Solo pre- and/or post- production limited to regular hours and subject to edit suite availability with curriculum and cablecasting needs as first and second priorities, respectively.

VIDEOTAPES and DUBBING

The studio provides a tape for program recording, and keeps the master.

The producers retain applicable copyrights and access to the master.

DUBS (VHS only-three dub maximum): User tapes/$5 each; Studio tapes/$10 each

Remote Location

· The studio will loan certain equipment, provided it is available, to trained and qualified WHS students who choose to produce independent programming for the channel. Student camera operators can be hired at a fee of $10/hr . Requests for a student camera operator can be made by completing a "Remote Location Filming Request Form" from the Office of School/Community Relations at 302 Elm Street, 789-4463.

· The public is encouraged to submit independently produced video tapes in VHS, SVHS or ¾" format to the Office of School/Community Relations for cablecast consideration.


Remote Location Filming Request Form

One aspect of the television curriculum at Westfield High School is to provide students with training in the use of VCR cameras for taping of productions to be aired on TV-36. To this end, WHS Television facilitates independent, student-produced filming by providing equipment and guidance. To request such a taping and the services of a trained student camera operator (@ $10 an hour), first submit this form to determine student availability.
