Join us for an evening coffee hosted by Special Education Committee members as another school year begins. This is an opportunity to network, ask questions, and gather information on how to help your children. We will be providing resource information on various services available, helpful websites, and recommended books. An overview of the year's presentations will be discussed as well.

All are welcome; there is no registration.

Please join us for an evening presentation on Oct. 26th at 7:30pm at the Edison Intermediate School Library. Dr. Ted Kozlik along with Child Study Team members Andrea Lo, Janet Harrison and Stacie Miller will be presenting a range of K-12 experiences in the Special Education process in our schools. They will cover items from the Learning Assistance Team process, the initial request for referral, the 20 day initial determination meeting, recommended assessments, the assessment process, eligibility, IEP and typical/placements. Afterward, they will be happy to respond to questions and any of the proposed changes to the Special Education rules and regulations. It will be a very informative meeting!  All are welcome.

FOSTERING SELF-ESTEEM AND REDUCING ANXIETY IN SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Guest Speaker: Daniel H. Gallagher, PhD, Clinical Psychologist

Daniel H. Gallagher, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in independent practice in Maplewood, New Jersey for 18 years.  Dan has extensive experience working with children, adolescents, parents, adults, families, and couples in private practice, as well as community-based agencies. Dan has served as a Team Consultant to the Jewish Education Association of Essex and Morris addressing parent and teacher concerns regarding preschool age children and works to develop positive growth-oriented strategies for classroom and home functioning.   Dan likes to work with kids and their families to help them realize that their strengths are always available to overcome their weaknesses. 

PLUS: an added bonus on a cold winter’s night: Dan’s got a great sense of humor and sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is to laugh!

Board of Education meeting - Special Education Public Budget Meeting

Presentation by: Dr. Ted Koslik

On January 31 Ted Kozlik will be addressing the board of education regarding special education as it relates to the budget process.  This meeting date was added recently in order to have public discussion on the process of how our budget is put together.  This is an opportunity for parents to give input regarding things like "Does the district need a K-8 supervisor of special education?" or "do we have enough speech language/ OT,PT, etc.?"  Your input is valuable and welcomed.

Dr. Ted Koslik will be presenting numerous issues such as budget, enrollment, and goals for the next year. At the end it will be opened up for questions from parents and board members. Attendance from parents will be a sign of support and give you a chance to voice any concerns. Come listen and be heard. Hope to see you there.

How to Strengthen Reading Comprehension

A Special Education teacher in private practice in Metuchen, New Jersey, David is a Certified Member of Orton-Gillingham Academy. He is also Past President of the New Jersey Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.

The program will explain:
How a Multi-Sensory approach to development of Reading Comprehension and Written Expression can be combined with Study Skills Instruction using both fiction and non-fiction passages.

This program is free and open to all families. Registration is required.

The program includes two, one-hour “break out” type sessions, covering an assortment of child related topics. This year’s Expo will include the following topics and speakers of interest:

The Awareness Expo is sponsored by the Westfield PTC-Special Education Committee, an organization that serves as a resource for teachers and the parents of regular education and special education students. The Committee is a not funded and collects donations to support its annual fund-raiser: The Katherine E. Cuthbertson Memorial Fund. The Awareness Expo is open to the public and free of charge; pre-registration is not required.

Western Union County CHADD Chapter  meets the second Wednesday of each month at Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside 7:30-9:30PM, features expert speakers in diagnosing of, treatment of, and support for Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD, formerly ADD).  All are welcome. Chadd is a non-profit, national organization providing education, advocacy and support.  For more information, please call (908)301-0709.
