Service to America Award

In 1997, President Bill Clinton held a summit in Washington, D.C. on volunteerism. At this conference, he challenged all youth organizations to make a commitment to provide service in their surrounding communities. The Boys Scouts of America responded to the President's call with a commitment to provide 200 million hours of service by youth members by the end of the year 2000. The BSA's campaign is called "Service to America".

Service to America projects:

  • Should involve youth
  • Should be compatible with the aims and objectives of the Scouting movement
  • Should be meaningful to the participating scouts
  • May include local council Scouting for Food programs
  • Should be recorded on the Quality Unit Award application

Scouts who complete a minimum of 12 hours of service per year are awarded the Service to America patch.
