Place: Gumbert Fields, Westfield, NJ (On South Chestnut Avenue, near the Garwood Shop-Rite).
Charities Benefitted: Liam's Room; Sister Pat's Camp; Theta Phi Alpha Foundation.
Purpose: To share and spread the love of baseball in an atmosphere that promotes and encourages citizenship and charity. The tournament is intended to be a community event that encourages the appropriate celebration of Memorial Day, fosters charitable donations for local purposes and emphasizes the fun of the game. This is billed as a pre-summer season, get-to-know your travel team experience. Competition should be spirited but not fierce. Seeding game schedules should be arranged carefully so that each team is able to play an easier game, a competitive game and a difficult game. There should be praise for all participating teams; official “awards” should be held to a minimum with only the championship team receiving a modest trophy for each player and the head coach. All players and the head coach receive a t-shirt as a gift from K of C Council 1711.
Eligibility: Town teams who meet the appropriate age requirements. No AAU teams, school teams or multi-town tournament teams. All teams will submit roster of players and proof of eligibility. Invitations extended and accepted in the discretion of the tournament director. Each team must make a $175 contribution to participate. Historically, the Council has sponsored an inner-city or charity team.
Format: 11 Year Old Bracket and 12 Year Old Bracket
There should be an optimum number of eight teams in each age group, for a total of 16 teams. Three seeding games are guaranteed to each team. Top four teams in each age group advance based on Won/Lost; head to head and runs allowed.
The teams in each age group are then seeded one through four and play single elimination semifinal game. The semifinal winners then meet for a championship game. If the bracket is smaller than eight teams, you may consider adoption of a consolation game for the semifinal winners.
Number of Seeding Games: 24 (provided 16 teams participate) played on all three available fields. Remote site games should be discouraged because they diminish the community and charitable purpose of the tournament. |
