Free Junior
Girl Scout Safety First
Workshop This Sunday
In
partnership with Raritan
Valley Community College,
Girl Scouts of Washington
Rock Council will be holding
a two part Safety First
Workshop focused on
emergency preparedness. The
workshop begins this Sunday
March 30 and occurs again on
April 6 from 2 p.m. – 3:30
p.m. at the Watchung Ave.
Presbyterian Church in North
Plainfield. Girls who
participate in the workshop
will earn the Safety First
Junior Badge. The workshop
series is free and is open
to all Junior Girl Scouts
and non-Girl Scouts. To

Change of Plans
Please
be advised that the CAC/Delegates
meeting originally scheduled
for Tuesday, April 8th
has been changed to Tuesday,
April 15th. The
location remains the
same--Union Catholic HS
Auditorium beginning at 7:00
p.m. A notice will be
sent to all elected CACs and
delegates.
Come Down and
Shop
On Saturday March 29,
Eileen Fisher, a store located
at 9 Elm Street in the heart of
Downtown Westfield will be
teaming up with GSWRC. A
portion of all sales between 12
noon-4 p.m. will go to benefit
Girl Scouting in the 25
communities proudly served by GSWRC. More information on
this event will follow in the
coming weeks.
Silver
and Gold Dinner
The 2008 Silver and
Gold Dinner is slated for
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from
6-10 p.m. The deadline
for ads is this Friday, March
28. It will be held
at Snuffy's Pantagis Renaissance
in Scotch Plains and salute of
many members of our hard-working
corps of volunteers in addition
to our Gold Award recipients.
Individual tickets, priced at
$70 will go on sale on April 1.
However, communities don't have
to wait that long to get a seat
at the table. By selling
ads for our Ad Journal or
sponsorships, communities can
secure seats at the table at no
cost. Below are the
relevant forms and explanations.

Kohl's Offering
Scholarship
Kohl's plans to award
over $300,000 in scholarships
and prizes to more than 1,900
kids whose volunteer efforts
have made a positive impact on
their communities.
Nominees must be legal U.S.
residents of a state in which a
Kohl’s store is located.
Nominees must be between the
ages of 6 and 18 and not yet a
high school graduate as of March

Scholarship
Available
In 1985, then-President
Ronald Reagan, proclaimed
May as the official
Asian-American Heritage
Month. Somerset County
Asian American Heritage
Month Celebration Committee
(SCAAHMCC) was founded in
2003 to promote Asian
heritage and cultural
exchange, and to host a
county wide Asian heritage
celebration in the month of
May.
In 2007, SCAAHMCC created a
scholarship award to
encourage our youths and to
nurture leadership in a
multicultural society. This
scholarship will be awarded
to a high school student in
Somerset County who
demonstrates high scholastic
standing, strong leadership
skills and a dedication to
community service.

Kids Day on the Horizon

going to be a great
day!!! Laura Posada,
wife of
four-time world champion
Yankee Baseball Player
Jorge Posada, co-founder

The Jorge Posada
Foundation and Fit Home
Team, model, lawyer and
mother of
two will be joining us.
She will be kicking off
the event at 2:00 and
will
be speaking to kids and
parents about her
experiences with her son
Jorge who
was diagnosed with
Craniosynostosis when he
was just a baby. Laura
is an
amazing woman and
charismatic speaker who
knows just how important
finding
and preserving health is
from experience. She has
some great real-world
tips
on how to get and stay
healthy as a family. In
addition, Laura will be
teaching aerobics and
will share her inner
most secrets about what
she does
to stay fit and how she
incorporates healthy
eating and activity into
her
daily life. There will
also be lots of fun
games and activities
designed to
help kids and parents
learn how to read labels
and make healthier
choices.
Learn the differences
between healthy and
unhealthy lunchboxes,
find out if
there is such a thing as
healthy take out, take
the healthy food
challenge,
learn about the food
pyramid and lots more.
There will be tons of
literature
and information, free
diabetes screening for
anyone over the age of
18 and
lots more. In addition
there will be an
obstacle course, freeze
dance for
the little ones and lots
of great prizes! The day
has been designed to get
the whole family active
and moving. All ages are
welcome.
The event is free and is
open to the general
public. You do not need
to be a
member of the YMCA to
attend. Advanced
Reservations are
requested but not

McGuire
Air Expo on Tap
The 305th Air Mobility
Wing will host the 2008
McGuire Air Expo - which
is FREE to the public -
on May 31 and June 1,
2008.
Headlining this year's
event will be the U.S.
Air Force Thunderbirds.
Additionally, the F-15
air demonstration team
and the Air Force
Reserve Command's Jet
Car are scheduled to
perform. A large number
of current and former
military aircraft,
including the base's own
KC-10 Extender, C-17
Globemaster III and
KC-135 Stratotanker will
also be on display.
Our "Above All.Be Inspired" theme captures Air Force members desire to
inspire others and
provides a fitting
conclusion to this
year's Air Force Week in
Philadelphia.

Day Event
There is going to be
an Earth Day Celebration
on April 12 at Liberty
Hall in Union. The cost
of the event is $14 and
participants will learn
about a plethora of
environmental issues.

Fundraiser Underway
From now until June 15,
be sure to stop in to
Parker Gardens (1325
Terrill Road, Scotch
Plains) for all your
plant and garden needs.
Doing so will result in
a portion of the
proceeds coming back to
GSWRC. Just be
sure to mention the Girl
Scouts when completing
your purchase.
Troop-Led
Programs
As we move into the
new council, we are embracing
the concept of Cadette and
Senior troops leading
council-wide programs and earn
money for their troops in
return.

Day Camp
Brochure Now Available
This summer, GSWRC will once
again hold a pair of Day Camps
within its jurisdiction. Camp
Sinawik will be held at the
Jerseyland Community Center in
Scotch Plains and Camp Juliette
will take place at Westminster
Academy in Elizabeth.

House

Operation Cookie
Drop
GSWRC is currently
organizing Operation Cookie Drop.
This program will be held in
conjunction with Booth Sales.
In the event customers do not wish
to come away with cookies or wish to
support the military at the Booth
Sale, they can designate them for
the USO. The cookies will then
be given to the USO and shipped to
military facilities worldwide.

Shop is open Monday through Thursday
8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 9:15 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. on Fridays. The GSWRC
Council Service Center is open Monday
through Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on
Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The shop
is open the first Saturday of the month
from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in addition to its
late closing time the second Tuesday of
each month.
