What is offered?

The Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council offers you many opportunities to learn and grow as a Girl Scout Adult. As a new Leader, we offer the Basic Course in Girl Scouting and in the Age Level you will be working with. First Aid Training is available for the safety of the girls and Outdoor Training is provided to ensure the girls have a great time in the out of doors while learning about nature. It is all about the GIRLS. Besides that, we offer additional Enrichment courses on Conflict Resolution, Ceremonies, Traditions and Ways of Girl Scouting and More!

What training is required for new leaders?

Safety Wise requires that adults working with troops/groups receive appropriate training for the activities that they are responsible for. All troops are required to have at least one adult with the following training. All training is presented in progression!

  1. Introduction to Girl Scouting: (new leaders only) Contact your Service Unit Manager to arrange for this course. You must complete this prior to meeting with your troop.
  2. Basic Leader Training (BLT) Pre requisite: Intro to Girl Scouting
  3. Program Age Level Training (Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Girl Scouts ages 11-17) Prerequisite: BLT
  4. First Aid/ CPR (this person may be someone different then the leader/advisor, however they must be present when the troop is leaving their normal meeting place and needs to remain with the troop the entire time. NOTE: American Red Cross First Aid Certification is good for ONLY three (3) years from the date you took the course. American Red Cross CPR Certification is good for one (1) year from the date you took the course. As per GSUSA, adults acting as the Troop First Aider must possess CURRENT certification in BOTH Community First Aid and Safety AND CPR for certification to be acceptable. Adults possessing certification cards that have expired must complete a new course. There is NO exception for extensions. Plan ahead!

 What are Training Records?

You must keep track of all the training you receive. At the end of a training, the trainer will sign your Training Records Card. You are responsible for holding on to the information and keeping track of your training hours. These hours can be used towards your Leadership Development Pin, and Leaves.

Who May Attend GSWRC Girl Scout Courses?

Courses are open to anyone who wishes to attend on a first come first serve basis. Registered Girl Scouts receive preference on Waiting Lists.

Who Teaches Girl Scout Courses?

Most classes are taught by GSWRC Council Volunteer Trainers.  The First Aid Courses are taught by Certified American Red Cross Instructors who are also Council Trainers. These volunteers give their time to share their knowledge and love of Girl Scouting with all Girl Scout adults.

Some specialized classes may be taught by skilled Girl Scout staff members, or by special consultants or experts in a particular field.

Is There a Cost?

There is no charge for most Girl Scout training. Occasionally there will be a modest fee to cover site fees and items such as food or craft supplies which are used by the participants during the course. The cost for American Red Cross First Aid Training, which pays for a workbook, rental of mannequins and course supplies, is set by the American Red Cross under a special contract.  We strive to offer the lowest cost out there for our volunteers.

When special training is required to support troop activities, the cost of the training can be paid for from troop funds.

Do I Need to Register for all Classes?

Yes! Registration is required at least 10 days prior to the class so Trainers will have time to prepare sufficient materials. Register earlier, if possible, as some courses fill quickly.

Times and locations of classes sometimes need to be adjusted, or occasionally a class may be canceled. Your Trainer cannot give you this information unless you are registered.

Do Classes Ever Fill Up?

Yes, they do. Class size is limited by the facility, type of course and number of trainers available.

Early sign-up is strongly advised.

What if I Can't Attend After I Have Registered?

Please be sure to call the Council Training Registrar at (908) 232-3236 ext. 1217 if you must cancel. There are often waiting lists for courses, and others could attend in your place.

Are Classes Ever Canceled?

Occasionally classes must be canceled due to weather, site problems, insufficient registration or other unforeseen circumstances.

How Will I be Notified of Cancellations?

Usually telephone calls are made to notify registrants of cancellations. Occasionally cards may be sent. If schools in the area of the class are closed due to inclement weather, the class is automatically canceled. Please call the Council for further information.

Do I Get Refunded?

If you did not call to cancel at least 1 week prior to the course date then no refund will be provided.  If you do notify Council that you are unable to attend we will make every effort to reschedule and the fees will be credited to the new course date.

What Should I Bring to Class?

Information concerning materials or books to bring to each course is listed with the confirmation mailing you will receive 1 week before the training.

Bring a bag lunch and beverage for classes that extend over the lunch hour.

Some courses are held outdoors. Check the forecast and dress for the weather.

Please do not bring children.

Please do not bring cell phones. We understand that parents of young children need to be reached at all times. If you do NEED to bring a cell phone, make sure it is turned off, or silent and please step outside to take the call.

Are Additional Classes Ever Scheduled?

Yes, indeed. All additional class information is emailed to the Service Unit Manager and flyers are placed in their mailboxes to hand out to Leaders. Any additional courses will be added to the online Training Calendar as they are scheduled.
