About the Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council, Inc.
Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council, Inc. was officially created in
the spring of 1957 when eight Central Jersey Girl Scout Councils merged together to better
serve an increasing membership of 12,000 by combining resources. The merging Councils
included (listed in alphabetical order): Cranford Area, Council of
Elizabeth/Hillside/Linden; Plainfield Area; Council of Roselle/Roselle Park, Council of
Scotch Plains/Fanwood; Springfield; Union; and Westfield Local.
Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council, Inc. has been
inspiring girls for over 50 years; and to fully appreciate the formation of this entity, we should pay
respects to the founding members with a walk through the early years before the merger of
the communities that set the stage for the Council as it exists today. The following
historical trail of these eight Councils provides a glimpse into our roots through the
decades. This chronological walk is certainly not complete, but provides a few of the
highlights in order to show the character, heritage, and commitment that formed the
backbone of the establishment of the Council as we know it today.
