ADULT EDUCATION GENERAL INFORMATION The Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council has a commitment to its volunteers to provide ongoing Adult Education. Washington Rock recognizes that a well-trained volunteer is one who provides a happy, healthy and safe program. Benefits of Training
Training Requirements prior to first meeting · complete a volunteer application, · submit two references, · receive GSWRC position appointment letter · complete the New Leader Training course. Recommended Courses Program Age Level training and Enrichment trainings are also suggested for leaders that advance from one level to the next. These trainings help the leader learn how the girls are changing, and stay informed on changes from Girl Scouts of the USA and GSWRC. Expand your horizons and try new things! Reminder Trainers are VOLUNTEERS and they invest considerable effort to tailor the activities and materials to the size of the class. Please extend them the courtesy of arriving on time and thank them for their hard work.
This is a one-time, required training for all first time Leaders and Co-leaders. This course must be completed prior to meeting with your troop for the first time. Leaders completing this course will be able to take their troop on day trips and one night overnights in a building. (It does not include cooking over a fire.) Many GS Service Units offer this training in the Service Unit. However, you may take it at the Council Service Center. We will introduce you to:
Prerequisite: Completion of the Volunteer Management System application. To register: Complete Adult Education registration form and return to the Council Registrar Bring: Safety Wise, Council Training Card, Age level books, New Leader Packet, pen, paper. Time: All courses begin at 7:00 pm unless noted. This course takes 3 hours to complete. Location: Council Service Center (Location subject to change. Participants will be notified) Program Age Level Training (PALT) is a specific course for each age level. It is not required, but strongly recommended for new Leaders and those moving to the next level in the Girl Scout program. This very informative course expands the participant knowledge of the program aspect of Girl Scouting. You will explore the Petals, Try Its, Badges, Interest Project Patches, bridging activities, ceremonies, product sales and trips. ENRICHMENT TRAININGS All older girl leaders (leaders of girls 11-17) are welcome to one or all of these roundtable meetings to sharing, discuss and learn. Each meeting will be different as the participants will share ideas and issues. New materials from GSUSA will be introduced and discussed. Great for new and experienced leaders! Prerequisite: New Leader Training To register: Complete registration form and return to the Registrar. Bring: Safety Wise, program level books, Council Training Card, pen, paper. Date & Time: This course is 2 hours. Location: Council Service Center (Location subject to change. Participants will be notified.) FIRST AID TRAININGAccording to Safety Wise, troops are required to have an individual certified in First Aid and CPR for many activities. (See Safety Wise and Operational volunteer Policies and Procedures for details). Certifications can be obtained in many ways. The American Red Cross is one of the organizations that provides recognized courses that meet the Girl Scout requirements. Individuals (Leaders, Parents or helpers) wanting to take a First Aid and CPR certification course can do so by contacting their local Red Cross Chapter or by attending one of the courses offered by the council. You can find information about First Aid and CPR courses on the following web sites. www.westfieldmtside-redcross.org http://www.tricountyredcross.org/community.htm http://www.summitrc.org/coursesched.htm First Aid and CPR Courses offered at the Council Service Center Community First Aid and Safety This training provides certification in emergency care, rescue breathing including CPR for adults, children and infants. The course is taught by an American Red Cross Certified Instructor. Participants must review the book prior to attending class. Prerequisite: Physically able to do CPR Fee: $65.00 (Must be enclosed with registration form.) To register: Complete Course Registration form and return to the Registrar. Bring: Pencil, paper, and a bag lunch (if attending an all day class) Wear comfortable clothing. NO LIPSTICK, jewelry or rings. Long hair must be tied back. Time: This course takes 9 hours to complete. Location: All courses are currently scheduled for Council Service Center. They are subject to change. CPR Review for Re-Certification Participants in this training must be currently certified in Community First Aid and Safety and Adult, Infant and Child CPR. They will review with an instructor for recertification of the CPR. Participants must review the book prior to class. Prerequisite: Current certification of Community First Aid and Safety including CPR for adults, children and infants.
To register: Complete Course Registration form and return to the Registrar. A copy of your current card(s) must be attached to the registration form at time of registration. Registration will be delayed without it. Bring: Your current First Aid and/or CPR cards. Pencil, paper, and a bag lunch (if attending an all day class) Wear comfortable clothing. NO LIPSTICK, jewelry or rings. Long hair must be tied back. Time: This course takes approximately 4.5 hours to complete. Location: All courses are currently scheduled for Council Service Center. They are subject to change. (Registered participants will be notified of changes.) This course allows you to put into practice all the skills and principles that you have learned. Upon completion of this session participants will be Troop Camp Certified and can lead a group tent camping, cook out-of-doors and lead trips longer than one night. We will be sharing experiences, ideas, resources and how to run a successful Encampment at Camp Lou Henry Hoover. Waterfront ManagementThis course will qualify you to be an on-site manager of the waterfront facilities at Camp Hoover. Course Content
We will discuss the different types of watercraft, deep water testing, cost of boating and waterfront staff. You do not need to be a lifeguard to take this course. . Dining Hall/Kitchen Management (ENR606)Required course to use the Dining Hall/Kitchen Complex at Camp Hoover. Upon completion, you will be qualified as an on-site manager of the Dining Hall/Kitchen Complex. Course Content
This course takes 5 hours to complete. This course is a great way to help teach girls to take risks, build self-esteem and improve teamwork. This training qualifies you to lead your troop at the Camp Hoover Challenge (Ropes) Course. Course Content
Dress
comfortably, warmly and wear boots. This course takes 3.5 hours to
complete. As a result of input from trainers, leaders, service team members and staff, the training delivery format for Outdoor and Overnight Training changed effective August 1, 2007. The new training curriculum was designed by volunteers and staff from Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council, Girl Scouts of Greater Essex and Hudson County Council and Girl Scouts of Rolling Hills Council. Step 2 and Step 3 are priced at $10 each, Step 1 is free. To register for Steps 2 and 3 at the Oval, contact the Girl Scouts of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties at 973-746-8200. For Steps 2 and 3 at Camp DeWitt, contact the Girl Scouts of Rolling Hills at 908-725-1226.
1. Classes must be taken in order. 2. Step 2 and 3 can be taken separately or together. Each course is 3 hours. 3. No overnight is required. 4. All three councils offer Steps 2 and 3 at various sites in their council. Participants can sign up for classes at any location. 5. GSWRC will offer Step 2 and 3 with an enrichment training that includes an over night at Camp Hoover. 6. Leaders, who have already taken Troop Camp Training, do not need to take this redesigned course. 7. Leaders wanting to take a trip longer than 2 nights must contact their Membership Specialist at least six months before the trip.
