Acid Rain
  • By Rachel K
2
What is acid rain?
  • Any type of precipitation that has been polluted by acid
  •  in other words slightly acidic rain

3
What two elements are responsible for acid rain?
  • Sulfur dioxide
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • SO2(from factories)
  • NO2(from transportation)
4
Why is acid rain a misleading term?

  • It does not burn through everything

  • It does not always come down as rain

5
What things do humans do cause acid rain?
  • Drive cars which give off exhaust
  • People work in factories that give off smoke
  • Burn fossil fuels

6
How does acid rain harm us?
  • It increases breathing problems like asthma
  • It can cause inflammation of the eyes nose or throat
  • Kidney problems
  • Can cause Alzheimer's disease
  • Nervous disorders
  • Through food
7
What damage does acid rain do to plants and trees?
  • Nutrients in the soil are washed away
  • Gas can clog up their leaves
  • It can harm photosynthesis
  • Can stop them from making their food
  • Damages their protective coatings
  • Weakens plants
8
How acid rain effects buildings and structures
  • wears rock structures down
  • Bridges to collapse or become unstable
  • Eats away at houses and statues
  • It dissolves alloys
  • Eats away stones and metal pipes
9
Acid Rain Cycle
  • Coal burning industries or transportation vehicles send nitrogen or sulfur into the air
  • Sulfur or nitrogen combines with oxygen and air
  • Sulfur/nitrogen dioxide forms
  • Sulfur or nitrogen dioxide combines with H2O
  • Comes down as snow, fog, rain, sleet, hail, etc.
