AND DRUG EDUCATION CURRICULUM


GRADE 9

I. RATIONALE, DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE

Students in the ninth grade Comprehensive Family Living, Health & Safety, Drug Education Program will be provided an opportunity for acquiring the knowledge necessary to understand the physical, social and mental development of the eight stages of life. They will study the significance of sexuality as a condition of their lives, reviewing both their responsibilities and privileges. The students will be made aware of the types and causes of sexually transmitted diseases and their responsibility to help prevent the spread of these diseases. The on-going study of tobacco, alcohol and drugs will give students an understanding of the uses and abuses, effects on the body and personal responsibilities concerning drugs.

II. OBJECTIVES

By the conclusion of the grade nine family living/health unit, students will:

A. Know what sources are available for information about family, family living, health or personal areas, personal development and be encouraged to refer questions and concerns to them. The first source of information should be parents. Other sources are other family members, clergy, physicians, community agencies.

B. Be able to synthesize, interpret and express information about various health issues and explain the information to different audiences.

C. Know and understand the role of emotions in personality development, the effects of emotions on the human body and ways to cope with emotions and stress

D. Understand that sexuality is more than purely a physical act.

E. Realize that an individual's physical, mental and social development is regulated by endocrine secretions

F. Recognize the purpose and functions of the male and female reproductive systems

G. Distinguish between responsibilities and privileges and recognize the relationship between them

H. Develop respect for male and female relationships and the process of conception

I. Know the causes and consequences of sexually transmitted diseases

J. Know methods of preventing sexually transmitted diseases

K. Be able to demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and pactical use of the Library/media center resources as these relate to the course content

H. Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize the symptoms of abusive behavior and ways to deal with this by:

IV. METHODOLOGY

A variety of instructional methods will be used including lecture, inquiry questioning, discussion, reset, reporting and group work.

V. EVALUATION

Students will describe their knowledge and understanding of the drugs, alcohol and tobacco objectives by written tests and quizzes, in classroom discussion, in oral or written reports and projects by demonstrating a responsible attitude in regard to them, and knowledge and use of the library media center through the successful completion of appropriate projects and assignments.

VI. TECHNOLOGY

Teachers of this curriculum will use available CD Roms on topics appropriate to the subject matter taught. As technology becomes more available in the regular classroom students will be encouraged to use the Internet for projects and research.

VII. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Teachers who are not trained or comfortable in using technology in the classroom must participate in appropriate courses or sessions to gain expertise. Regular attendance at conferences scheduled for maintaining skills or learning new information about this field will be expected of all teaching staff.
