COMPREHENSIVE FAMILY LIVING, HEALTH & SAFETY,
AND DRUG EDUCATION CURRICULUM


GRADE 2

II. and III. OBJECTIVES, CONTENT, SCOPE AND SEQUENCE

I. Students will develop an understanding of family relationships and responsibilities in order to build unique family bonds and establish interpersonal skills for effective family life.

A. Describe the Family Unit

1. Identify parent responsibilities, e.g., feeding, protecting, providing housing, helping children grow and become independent, loving and respecting their children, etc.

2. Identify child's responsibilities, e.g., do simple tasks, cooperate, be respectful

3. Discuss fact that each family is different. Allow each child to discuss his or her family, e.g., number of siblings, parents, guardians, grandparents, or others living with the family.

Discussion should be child-driven.

II. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of the maturing body.

A. Being Aware of Growth and Development

1. Growth is natural for all living things

b. Realize that our thoughts about ourselves affect what we think of ourselves

V. Students will learn how to cope with acceptable and unacceptable social behavior.

1. Identify abusive situations (physical, sexual, verbal, mental)

a. Define as: a constant attack with words, e.g., badgering, belittling, etc.

VI. Students will examine their personal expectations and recognize their own abilities about the process and skills needed for problem solving

1. List reasons for physical symptoms from emotions, e.g., forgetting homework, fight with someone, etc.

2. Discuss coping with physical symptoms, e.g., get medical attention, call home, start on new project, exercise

I. Students will develop an awareness of personal hygiene and factors involved to maintain a healthy body

2. Learn good health habits

a. Realize habits are things we do many times, eventually not thinking about them

a. Discuss how breakfast is needed for energy to work and play, as well as other meals

DRUG EDUCATION

I. Students will identify give examples, and explain the effects of helpful drugs and chemicals.

A. Identify Medication

1. Distinguish terminology between "drug" and "medicine"

a. Identify a drug: a substance taken for the feelings it produces, e.g., alcohol and marijuana

b. Identify medicine: a substance taken to ease the effects of sickness or injury, e.g., aspirin, prescribed medicine

c. Identify vaccines - to prevent disease

2. Exhibiting care

a. Discuss prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs which should be appropriately ordered and given

b. Discuss medicines that should be stored in a separate place out of reach of small children

c. Discuss that prescriptions should be totally used as directed

3. Realize the blood can carry the medicine to all parts of your body

II. Students will identify, give examples, and explain the effects of harmful drugs and chemicals.

A. Describe Harmful Substances

1. Recognize that household substances should not be ingested, put into the eyes of left on the skin

2. Learn that any chemical substance should be used according to the directions on the label and stored safely

B. Describe noxious plants

1. Recognize poisonous plants and, if possible, avoid exposure to them

2. Give examples of noxious plants: poinsettia, rhododendron leaf, holly berry, mushrooms, poison oak

3. Be prepared for a remedy, e.g., consult a responsible person, have medications available, etc.

Library Media Skills

Students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and practical use of the library/media center resources as these relate to the course content.

V. TECHNOLOGY

Teachers of this curriculum will use available CD Roms on topics appropriate to the subject matter taught. As technology becomes more available in the regular classroom students will be encouraged to use the Internet for projects and research.

VI. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Teachers who are not trained or comfortable in using technology in the classroom must participate in appropriate courses or sessions to gain expertise. Regular attendance at conferences scheduled for maintaining skills or learning new information about this field will be expected of all teaching staff.

VII. EVALUTION

Students will demonstrate the achievement of the objectives through:

A. Quality of their work in cooperative groups - e.g., are groups able to solve problems?

B. Quality of their projects - e.g., are students able to list methods of coping

C. Questioning - e.g., "What have we learned today? How did it go? Why did we do this? What experiences can you describe?

D. Discussion and review questions

E. Change in behavior? - e.g., are there less fights after lessons in Conflict Resolution.

F. Tests - for example, can students name the parts of the digestion system

G. Their knowledge and use of the school library/media center with the successful completion of appropriate projects and assignments.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

1. Observing a mother, father or other adult caring for an infant and write down some things they do in caring for a child.

2. Ask students to create a list for bulletin board of ways that families show love for one another.

3. Ask members of different generations in the family what they remember about being 7 or 8 years of age.

4. Discuss/list some of the things that make a person angry and how people feel when they are angry.

5. Have the group list or collect a range of emotions common to all people.

6. Create a reward system in the class for students who manifest manners and good deeds without being told.

7. List and discuss several good deeds that the family might do as a unit, e.g., food basket to the church, taking care of a grandparent.

8. Discuss what activity you would choose if you could do anything with your family.

9. Get together with your family and find out about them, e.g., culture, favorite TV show, where they were born, what is remembered from earlier days, etc.?

10. Make a poster called "All About Me." Draw pictures that show how I am special.

11. On a sheet of paper, ask students to list things about themselves. Display on bulletin board with their photograph.

12. Have students, without talking, show how they feel.

13. Use open-ended sentence activity (Cf. health book, Choosing Good Health, P. 32). Have students finish sentences.

14. Have the students make a chart of good health habits. Put a check by each one done every day.

15. Draw a picture and label three loving people who care about "me".

16. Make a catalog of dangerous substances not to be ingested, e.g., pesticides, paints.

17. Collect phone numbers of police, poison control, fire, doctors, rescue squad, etc.

18. Construct charts and posters of poisonous plants to be avoided.

19. Discuss the dangers of touching, smelling, or tasting unfamiliar vegetation or substances.

20. Have students list their strong talents and abilities.

21. Find out the responsibilities of the Westfield Board of Health.

22. Display or have student project showing foods within the five food groups of the Food Pyramid.

23. Have students list the five senses.

24. Have students try on last year's clothes at home. Have them describe the fit.

25. Have students look at their eyes in a mirror, close their eyes, then open again. Have them describe what happens to their pupils.

26. Class could have a litter clean-up day.

27. List three ways to help keep the neighborhood clean.

28. See activity book from kit, "Here's Looking at you 2000".

29. Visit the school library/media center and use books or other information sources related to the lessons taught in this course.

30. Visit the school nurse and talk about health.
