COMPREHENSIVE FAMILY LIVING, HEALTH & SAFETY,
AND DRUG EDUCATION CURRICULUM
GRADE 12
I. RATIONALE, DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE
Grade 12 students in their exposure to this curriculum will learn important life skills such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Safety and emergency first aid procedures, personal health care management, and stress management. These will include:
A. Developing a greater understanding and appreciation of the complexity of life and the responsibility for maintaining good basic health practices
B. Understanding the importance of selecting qualified health care providers and settings
C. Understanding the contemporary issues in today's society including stress and stress management as an important health concern
D. Becoming aware of the importance of community resources and their availability
E. Understanding the psychological and physiological changes which occur when substances are introduced into the body
F. Learning basic principles of emergency care and prevention of injuries
G. Preparing a personal plan for living a healthful life
The program as outlined is designed to meet these goals. Students graduating from Westfield High School will have an understanding and working knowledge of the information listed in this curriculum. And as a result of completing this program, students will be better prepared to cope with themselves and others in everyday life situations.
TOPIC I. - CARDIO-PULMONARY RESUSCITATION

II. OBJECTIVES
By the completion of this unit students will:
A. Understand that CPR is an emergency procedure to be used during specific life threatening situations
B. Recognize symptoms of respiratory and/or cardiac arrest
C. Learn the proper application of CPR
D. Understand that the CPR procedure continues until medical help arrives or the patient recovers
E. Have a knowledge of and the ability to practice the CPR procedure
F. Be able to demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and practical use of the library/media center resources as these relate to the course content

A. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of CPR emergency procedures, symptoms of respiratory and/or cardiac arrest, application of CPR techniques by:

B. Students will demonstrate their understanding of CPR emergency procedures by demonstrations on CPR model.
C. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and use of the library/media center through the successful completion of appropriate projects and assignments.
TOPIC II. - SAFETY & FIRST AID (2.3, 13, 16, 17)
II. OBJECTIVES
By the completion of this unit students will:
A. Learn the basic principles of emergency care and prevention of injuries.
B. Identify practices that are potential causes of accidents.
C. Use behavior that minimizes the chance of having an accident.
D. Recognize how low levels of emotional and physical well being predispose to unsafe behavior.
E. Be skillful in the application of first aid and emergency care.
F. Relate basic factual information concerning the nature and characteristics of drugs.

By the conclusion of this unit students will:
A. Be able to demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and application of criteria for evaluating and selecting health care providers and services
B. Understand the rights of patients as identified in the American Hospital Association's Patients Bill of Rights
C. Understand the responsibilities as medical consumers
D. Be able to demonstrate a knowledge of health care insurance options
E. Be able to identify community resources as they relate to course content
F. Develop a personal plan for lifelong wellness using data from health assessments, family history, experiences and current health practices, and be able to evaluate progress toward meeting goals in the plan.

VI. TECHNOLOGY
Teachers of this curriculum will use available CD Roms on topics appropriate to the subject matter taught. As technology becomes more available in the regular classroom students will be encouraged to use the Internet for projects and research.
VII. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Teachers who are not trained or comfortable in using technology in the classroom must participate in appropriate courses or sessions to gain expertise. Regular attendance at conferences scheduled for maintaining skills or learning new information about this field will be expected of all teaching staff.
